hey,

I read DEW1's blog and her posts are so condescending. You are right, she should expect to be made fun of if she can make fun of a poor girl's efforts to put together a CV.

Hey, thanks for taking the time to reply, but I think you’ve “missed the boat” on the post. It’s not a poke at their struggles, it’s a poke at their patronising attitudes towards people who haven’t enjoyed the benefits of a Western education and who aren’t as “sophisticated” (I use the term advisedly) as expats.

If someone wants to publicly make fun of a poor girl’s efforts to put together a CV so she can try to get a job and help feed her family, they can expect to be ridiculed publicly for their lack of empathy.

And I’m perfectly entitled to a PIO card since my wife is of Indian origin.

Thanks again.

Hi. I had to let this post sit for a few days before posting a comment - but I cannot let it pass - I thought I could - but I cannot. There are a few things that you did not mention in this post that I feel are very worthy of inclusion. First of all, expats are here to embrace all that India has to offer - we are trying to bloom in systems that we did not create. Bringing your family to India is an amazing experience but there is no way that it would be without challenges. Mostly what we experience (and write about) as a frustration one day quickly becomes a funny story the next day. Surely you can appreciate the release that writing provides.

And possibly you could have "reported" that expats are certainly not the only ones who struggle with staff woes. Nearly every Indian woman I have met has been tremendously frustrated by having staff in their lives.

I am also very surprised that you, as a journalist, did not interview the women you quote in your blog. If you had, or if you had read more of their blogs, I am sure you would have found that this is barely one-one hundreth of what their experience in India has been. I don't know DEW1 but I do personally know DEW2 and while her house is being cleaned, she is volunteering in the community in a million different ways. She is giving back to India. She is not sitting around having caraway seeds picked out of her teeth for her. She also tells about the amazing people she has met and the historical sites she is visiting. And the frustration of being treated special when most expats find the caste system ridiculous.

Anyway, your little poke at their struggles surely created some laughs but it is only a very small part of a much larger story that you completely missed the boat on. Finally, it is ironic that you brag about getting a POI card that you are clearly not entitled to and then you roast these women for complaining about staff as if they are the brats. Hmmmm.
